Taking Off: An Excerpt

As I stepped onto the plane, I took a deep breath. I hated flying. But my German-born husband was returning to his home country for a year-long sabbatical, and I, his Barbados-born Canadian wife, had taken a year off teaching to join him on the adventure. Our reluctant teenage daughter shuffled along behind me, looking morose. She would be attending a new school in a new country, away from her friends and familiar surroundings. But at least it was a French-language school, and she was already fluent in French.

As for my own apprehensions about spending a year in Germany, did I mention I don’t speak German?
